Introduction

Welcome

Promoting sustainable rural development by providing support and expertise to the businesses and communities of the region is part of the core remit of Tipperary Institute. The Institute is unusual in that it integrates third level education with rural and business development programmes. This integration provides many benefits to the Institute's clients. The rural community or business client can now access valuable resources that are traditionally seen as locked within third level institutions.

Specialist staff at Tipperary Institute, whilst conducting activities normally seen as academic, such as lectures, tutorials and research, also can provide assistance, advice, mentoring and consultancy to a wide community and business client base in the region. This ability to integrate academic activity with rural and business development work also provides clear benefits to our student-clients, through ensuring that Specialist staff remain grounded in the realities of our rapidly changing community and business environments.

The work of the Institute is carried out by three specialist departments; Information and Communications Technology, Business Development and Rural Development. The Corporate Affairs department provides support to the work of the specialist departments as well as managing the high quality conference, computing and communication facilities available to both internal and external clients.

The Institute's management and staff work to deliver the mission given to the Institute by the Government of Ireland:

To promote sustainable socio-economic development in the region served by the Institute

The purpose of this section of the website is to provide an insight into the activities and capabilities of Tipperary Institute in the areas of rural and business development. (Information regarding third-level courses can be found in our current full-time and evening course prospectuses). The information provided here is intended to give an overview of the types of development activity already completed and currently being undertaken by the Institute. While it is not intended to encompass all our activities, I hope that it will give you a greater understanding of the complex and valuable role that Tipperary Institute can play in the development of the region.
