Entry Requirements:

A minimum of Five Passes in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English/Irish.

A full FETAC Level 5 award or FETAC Level 6 award.

Mature applicants will be required to undertake a written assessment and complete a detailed written application in accordance with the Institute's entry procedures.  The application process will consider the applicant's academic ability (previous education, readiness for 3rd level study) and their suitability (communication skills, motivation and interest in the course and career area).

About the Programme:
The Higher Certificate in Business and Office Management is a two year programme, giving students an opportunity to gain knowledge of essential business principles and functions, and to acquire relevant skills and competences in the areas of IT and multimedia.  Designed around six specialisations, the key areas of study include: management, marketing, finance, the soft skills of teamwork and public relations, graphic design and web development with a particular emphasis on the technologies which enhance office management.

 

This highly practical and innovative new programme aims to provide students with the fundamental business and IT skill sets enabling graduates to enhance the productivity and efficiency of an office and to contribute to the growth of the organisation.

 

The Multimedia component of this programme will be a focal attribute for any graduate of the Higher Certificate.  Students will gain the knowledge and skills to develop websites and build content for these websites; as well as for brochures, e-magazines and a range of information/promotional material.

The Higher Certificate in Business and Office Management aims to equip students with a qualification that has a competitive standing in the marketplace and the skills that are pivotal to the contemporary business world.  On completion of this programme, students will possess the broad range of skills and capabilities required at the administration lever of business practice.  These competencies will facilitate progression to a career within a wide range of industries which require a sound knowledge of business with practical computing and multimedia skills.

Graduates can benefit from further education by using their Higher Certificate as a pathway to study at degree, honours degree and postgraduate level.  Students who successfully complete this programme will be eligible to progress to the Level 7 Bachelor of Business Degree programme offered by Tipperary Institute or to equivalent programmes.

Courses are divided into modules or self-contained units of learning.
ECTS is the abbreviation used for the European Credit Transfer System. Each module is given a value between 1 and 60 to describe the amount of work required to complete it. These reflect the quantity of work the module requires in relation to the total amount necessary to complete a full year of academic study. A value of 60 credits represents the workload involved in one year of study. TI course modules are generally allocated 5, 10 or 15 credits.

Year 1:  Semester 1

Management Principles

This module will explore key management functions and skills.
and examine the theory supporting management practice, past and present.

Marketing Principles 1

This module will introduce students to the principles of marketing beginning with understanding underlying theoretical bases
 

Fundamental Accounting

This module will provide the student with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to prepare the accounts and records that form part of the double entry system and to prepare the statements that flow there from.

Business Maths

This module will develop business computational and mathematical skills and concepts.
 

 

Communication Methods

This module will give the students practical experience in using computerised office packages

 

Graphic Design 1

This module will introduce students to the fundamental elements of Visual Communications and Students will establish a strong foundation in both the artistic and technical aspects of the subject

This module will examine organizational theory concepts and models, including those in the  classical and contemporary fields

 

Marketing Principles 2

This module will build on an understanding of the role of marketing in modern business by introducing students to the skills and techniques used in the management of the marketing function

Accounting Principles

This module will teach how to prepare and present financial statements for sole traders, companies and other organisations in accordance with current statutory requirements and standards

Business Applications

This module will provide the student with advanced practical skills to make effective use of Business Information Systems in a business setting

 

Business Statistics

This module will develop statistical concepts and computational skills for business

 

Graphic Design 2

This module will emphasise the use of the computer as an additional medium with which to create images, and develop a deeper understanding of visual communications

This module will develop an understanding and application of fundamental microeconomic concepts

 

Project Management

This module will teach the student to develop and use an application oriented approach to apply knowledge in relation to project management in real life situations

 

Accounting for Costs

This module will provide the learner with an insight and understanding of the use of management accounting systems

 

Effective Teamwork

This module will facilitate participants’ understanding of groups and their individual role in groups

 

Office Management Technologies

This module will raise the level of competence in office related computing applications and to recognise their interactivity

 

Web Development 1

This module will introduce the student to the World Wide Web and associated technologies

Macroeconomics

This module will develop an understanding and application of fundamental macroeconomic concepts

 

Accounting for Management Control

This module will develop an understanding of a variety of costing techniques and promote the learners understanding of budgeting and standard costing and variance analysis as an essential tool for planning and controlling business costs

 

Public Relations

  • This module will show students how to write a series press releases for different test clients
  • To expose students to public relations practitioners through online interactions
  • To script an audio comment suitable for international release
  • To produce a series of 30-second promotional messages
  • To develop an awareness of professional and ethical issues surrounding the PR profession
  • To become familiar with job descriptions and salary levels in the PR sector

 

Management Information Systems

This module introduces learners to the organisational foundations of Information Systems and also introduces learners to the concepts of Information Systems management.

 

Desktop Publishing

This module aims to give the student practical experience in
producing print materials using current DTP tools and gives the
student an increased level of competence in graphic design packages

Web Development 2

Extends the student’s knowledge and skills in the area of web development and ensures that the students knowledge and skills in the areas of (X)HTML and CSS are sufficient to support course material in other modules on the program
