Computer Competition participants get top jobs

High performers at Tipperary Institute organised ‘intervarsity’ computer game challenge, Robocode, have put themselves in the front-line for computer programming positions at top companies, organisers of the games and employers say. The virtual contest, now in its fifth year will be hosted at Tipperary Institute’s Thurles campus, on the 13th March 2008, and will involve computer-game loving students from third level institutions pitting their very own software for ‘tank-war’ battles against rivals’ from other colleges and SchoolBots from ten second level schools. Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, were winners of this years SchoolBots challenge giving them a strategic head start for the 2008 event.

The SchoolsBots are developed using a system that relies on coordinate geometry. This allows student to improve their understanding of important maths concepts by exploring an exciting practical application.

A key objective of the competition is to encourage creativity in computer software programming skills and organisers say that those who excel at the competition tend to enhance their chances considerably of securing positions at top companies when they graduate. For the schools that participate it creates an opportunity to make maths fun, the student also walks away with some well earned bragging rights. Lets get ready to ‘RUMBLE!’ for Robocode Ireland 2008 Competition and SchoolBots Challenge.
