A graduation ceremony with a difference took place at Tipperary Institute on June 12th last, as 100 primary school children were awarded Certificates of Participation for their involvement in the Institute’s ‘College 4 Kids’ programme.
Sixth class children from St. Joseph’s Primary School, Roscrea, St. Colmcille’s Primary School, Templemore and Presentation Primary School, Carrick-on-Suir participated on this year’s College 4 Kids programme, where they attended workshops at TI one day per week over a four week period. Designed to raise the aspirations of children towards education, the programme included workshops on Computing, French, Art, Marketing and Environmental Science.
Tipperary Institute is strongly committed to raising the aspirations of children towards their education and aims to work in partnerships with the education sector, families and communities in widening access to education. College4Kids is one of the many initiatives organised by the local Institute to encourage students and their parents to think about third level education. It is fully funded by the Institute, with staff from across the college volunteering of their time and energy to assist with the various workshops.
At the conclusion of the presentation of certificates, each school performed a party piece to great applause from their fellow participants and the TI staff in attendance. The real fun however, began after the graduation ceremony when the sports events took off. A wide range of activities spanned the afternoon from soccer and obstacle courses to egg and spoon and three legged races! As the sun made a rare appearance, the children were presented with medals and ‘goodie’ bags to recognise their achievements.
As the children prepare to move into secondary school in September, many commented that it will be one of the many highlights they will remember from their primary school days. So, tired but happy, one hundred children left TI, taking with them new knowledge of computers, French and much more as they prepare to embark on another new journey.
