| Tipperary Institute Students win national Budget competition | |||||||||
A group of Tipperary Institute students have won 1st place in a national competition this week. Eimear Corbett, Elizabeth Davis, Lisa Ryan and Tara Ryan, who are all 3rd year Bachelor of Business Studies Degree students in Clonmel have just won 1st place in the Irish Taxation Institute’s Fantasy Budget competition.
According to their lecturer, Kathleen O’Shea “This innovative competition was open to all full-time undergraduate students across the country, allowing them to explore ideas of what they would do in the next Budget if they were the Minister for Finance. Students were required to demonstrate the necessary skill, flair and imagination to put together a Budget that would introduce new and effective policy initiatives to the Irish tax system”.
Entries for the competition were judged by a panel of leading economists and taxation advisers, who looked for originality, sound reasoning and awareness of the likely impact of the proposals. The Clonmel team beat off strong competition from other third level colleges, including the runners-up, UCD and UL.
As part of their prize the girls presented their proposals to a group of senior economists and tax consultants in Dublin on Monday 7th December. The proposals of the group were:
Entry into The Fantasy Budget completion was part of the Continuous Assessment for the Taxation Module of the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) course. This is the first year that Tipperary Institute has entered the competition. The judges commented that the winning entry was selected because of the strong creativity and originality of the suggestions that were put forward. Warm congratulations to all involved.
